For most people, the exterior plywood of a building will be sufficiently degassed by the time the building is completed. PureBond formaldehyde-free plywood is fine. I haven`t used it, but I don`t see a problem with it. With that in mind, I`d like to know what kind of material you would recommend we use as a stand for a shelf. We want to build a wooden shelf to hold building blocks for children, and this question will arise when we try to make DIY versions of other types of furniture for our child and our home. These types of shelves usually have an underlay of particleboard or fiberboard. Since I want to avoid formaldehyde in these, I wonder if PureBond plywood would work or if there is a thinner (lightweight) option that is safe. We thought that a lower degree of jaw might be an option, as aesthetics are not important for the back, which will be barely visible anyway. Any other ideas? The fact remains that formaldehyde is formaldehyde and is carcinogenic, whether it is more trapped in the adhesive or not. But this type of plywood is accepted by U.S. green building codes and is a big improvement over wood containing urea-formaldehyde. This category is also known as NAUF („no added urea formaldehyde”). Plywood made with phenolic formaldehyde is not rich in formaldehyde because it quickly reaches undetectable levels. Luan (also spelled „luaun”) is a „fake” mahogany grown in Southeast Asia, and the plywood made from it contains a high proportion of urea-formaldehyde adhesives. A note about your local lumber business: Chances are your local lumber business doesn`t know much about „green” plywood. No problem so far – this seems to be the perfect material. The problem lies in the adhesive, which is usually a formaldehyde-based resin. Formaldehyde is a known carcinogen and releases gases into the atmosphere. Urea-formaldehyde resins, which are common in plywood in „interior quality”, dissipate to a high degree; „Exterior quality” plywood uses phenol-formaldehyde – still carcinogenic, but outsourced at a lower rate. Phenol-formaldehyde is more expensive and waterproof, which is why it is found outdoors. It is also a darker adhesive tone that can affect the color of the plywood. CARB II – Formaldehyde Levels CARB II is a standard set by California for products sold there, but when it comes to common building materials such as plywood, all major manufacturers tend to comply with California standards. Baltic birch plywood is made of solid birch veneer, cross-striped and laminated with outer glue.
Exterior grade adhesive is less toxic than inside. I`ve never used or inspected this plywood, so I have no first-hand experience, nor have I been able to find an MSDS to look for toxic ingredients. I would contact the manufacturer of these toys and see if you can get more information about the material. It looks safer and of better quality than other plywood, but I lack information. 6. Georgia-Pacific DensGlass can replace plywood siding in some areas. Purebond plywood is intended for indoor use such as furniture and cabinets (here are some carpenters that use Purebond).
